Kerene : I have a question. Earlier you stated that 당신 is not used in speech. If I wanted to ask, "do you want water," would 물을 원 합니다 suffice if I say it in the form of a question?
.
-합니다 is not a question form. and besides some cases like 감사합니다, 죄송합니다., it is not a form when we talk. And we don't say 'Do you want water?' but we say 'do you want to drink water?'
.
want to v ; v고 싶어요.
drink : 마시다
~> Do you want to drink water?
물 마시고 싶어요?
.
when the talk partner is obvious. Most of the time we don't use You. we don't say this form... you can say '원하다' but it doesn't sound naturally.
you should say ' I want to have somgthing' 'I want to take something' etc. or you can just say the word.
.
What do you want for dessert? Icecream
.
noun+요 form ^^
so you can reply 물이요.
.
뭐 마시고 싶어요?
물이요.
.
or
뭐 마시고 싶어요?
물 마시고 싶어요.
.
Kerene ) What if I wanted to say, He likes you?
.
it depends... but we don't use '그'. We don't use he and she when we talk. But we use the boy that boy your boyfriend my dad the guy.. etc
.
so it could be
그 남자가 너를 좋아해?
걔가 널 좋아해?
아빠가 널 좋아해?
찬이 널 좋아해?
etc
.
depends on how you call 'he' and who you are talking about ^^ when it's very obvious, you don't need to keep calling him. but when it's a bit confusing. like there are A B C person. You need to call them clearly. when you watch drama or something, try to listen to the subjects ^^
.
Manasik : 1.about 당신 I learned it from an app it means (in the app) if its in the question form : 당신은요? And you or how about you . If I want to ask this question what should I use instead of 당신은요 .
2.when do I get to call someone : 오빠 ,언니, etc
does the elder person have to allow me to say that or I can use them If I felt they are being friendly.
.
Am asking about the use of 오빠 because I know that koreans respect the age difference very much but I got confused because I met this guy he is like 35 and am 21 and I just started to talk to him and he told me to call him 오빠 but he is like so old and I don't know him !
.
aha in this case. It depends on how u wanna call him. As I said, 오빠 언니. can be used in school or in your family. and all my friends have their own standard. about how to call people
.
for me, I use 형 for 5 years age gap. and between 5 and 10 years old gap. I call them 형님.
if it's more than 10 years. I don't call them 형님. But other calling name. But when i was young i call a boy as 형 or 형아 if they look young like college student. But now the standard changed.
.
at this moment, since i am 26 in Korean age, the people more than 10 gap have their own job or something, I call them by the best calling name what I am thinking it is good to call him. it's hard to be close with 10 years gap people though^^. if i don't know how to call them, I use '선생님' even though they are not teacher. -씨 is a bit rude to call older guys in general situations. -님 is not used a lot. But if you are a user of the company like insurance or bank etc. The staff would call you with -님.
.
calling somebody is sometiems problem even to native Korean people^^ so, everything is up to you. And you can make your standard of calling somebody. there's no specific things. I recommend you call him 삼촌 or 오빠 .. 아저씨 is not good
.
ahhh when we call mom and dad, we never call their name. just 엄마 아빠 어머니 아버지 etc^^ there are so many calling name for them. 엄마 아빠 어머니 아버지 are common
